Class 1 – Basic Foundations – Progress Reel

This is it ! The end of class 1 and the start of the more exciting stuff ! Next quarter, we’ll be working on the basics of body mechanics and I’m looking forward to three 4-week animation projects.

For the last week of this class, we had to compile a progress reel with all the work from this class. Here it is:

This is the final version of my character walk, after taking into account my mentor’s critique. I will be posting a progress reel soon with a compilation of all the work from this quarter.

This is the final blocking pass I submitted for this week’s assignment. Now I’m waiting for the critique before I can start refining the animation.

Class 1 – Basic Foundations – Week 10 – Tuesday

This week we have to animate a character walk, meaning we can give the character a personality through it’s movement. This is going to be a fun assignment.

I started off this assignment by filming some reference of people walking to get some ideas and also watching some animation reference online.

I then filmed myself acting out a few different types of walk, and chose the one with most potential. Then I refined this walk by acting it out numerous times and pushing certain aspects of it.

Below is the final reference I’ve come up with, which I will use for this assignment:

I have already done a blocking pass on Tuesday night but have not uploaded it yet.

I’ve been working on refining the vanilla walk this week, using splined tangents and playing with the timing and spacing to give the walk a good feel of weight. I don’t think I have quite nailed it yet, but it’s getting closer

We also have to do some sketches and a Stu pose to emotion of being “concerned”. It’s a pretty hard one, as usually, this emotion is conveyed through facial expressions. Working with just the body is quite a lot harder:

This is my first blocking pass at the ‘vanilla’ walk for this week. I will add the planning sheet later.

At the moment, there is way too much hip movement, and the walk has got too much character as a result
I have to tone it down to make it more subtle and more ‘vanilla’
The legs seem to be working quite well though

Here is the final submitted version of my Tailor animation for week 7.
I have since received a critique from my mentor and have some amendments to make, especially to the end, when he drops down the pipe. I have to make this less floaty, and I also have to adjust the tail flicker before the second and third jumps.
